Dr. Murphy is a board certified physician in ophthalmological surgery with a special interest in the use of lasers for refractive surgery. Dr. Murphy began his academic training at the United States Naval Academy (Annapolis, Maryland), by appointment, and completed a BS degree at the University of Kansas. He went on to complete an MD degree at Kansas University Medical Center and an internship at the Scottsdale Memorial Hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona. Dr. Murphy did a residency in ophthalmology at Kansas University. Throughout his training he received a number of honors and awards, including election to the National Honor Society, and achieving the distinction of graduating "Second in his Class" from the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School and receiving an honorary appointment to attend the United States Naval Academy. He was a distinguished member of the Dean’s List, University of Kansas, and he is a member of "Who’s Who" in California. Dr. Murphy is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has been actively involved in research and publications related to opthalmological disorders and is a resident instructor at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Murphy has an active practice in San Diego, California with a special interest in PRK and LASIK refractive surgery, as well as small incision – topical and cataract surgery.
